About
====================

Landing page for the pacemaker channel **HCN** (potassium/sodium hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated channel). This channel creates the pacemaker current, also known as the **funny** current.

The HCN group is highly expressed in cardiac myocytes in order to generate action potentials for establishing heart beats. It is permeable to both potassium and sodium ions, with preference for potassium.

HCN is thought to be a homotetramer, where the channel is composed of a homo- or heterotetrameric complex of pore-forming subunits. It is activated by membrane hyperpolarisation, and all subfamilies except HCN3 are also activated by cAMP binding to their cyclic nucleotide binding domain.
